Child, father die after kayak overturns on Hart Lake in Hubbard County

Harlan Lloyd Gibbs, whose Indian name is Waasige Giizhigook Inini, which means Lightning Sky Man, 60, of Duluth, Minn., formerly of Redby, died Friday, Feb. 27, 2009, at Northland AFS in Duluth.

Traditional funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Redby Community Center in Redby. A wake will begin at 1 p.m. today at the Redby Community Center and will continue until the time of service. Burial will be in the Foxpoint Cemetery in Redby under the direction of the Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji.

The pallbearers will be Leslie Gibbs, Pat Defoe, Mike Defoe, Johnny Atkinson, Burton "Dee" Gibbs, Robert Gibbs III, Ramsey Gibbs, and alternates, Richard Gibbs and Oliver Gibbs.

Honorary pallbearers will be Clifford Howard, Bill Sayers, and Myron Gibbs Sr.

He was born on Nov. 11, 1948, to Robert Gibbs Jr. and Mary Louise (Gurneau) Gibbs in Red Lake. He was raised and educated in Red Lake. As a young man, he moved to Minneapolis, where he spent most of his life.

He spent the past 10 years living in Cloquet and Duluth.

He enjoyed going to casinos, and attending powwows. He was a singer and performed with drum groups. The traditional belief system became very valuable to him and an important part of his life. He formed special relationships with the Northland Adult Foster Care staff.

He is survived by his stepmother, Carol (Greenleaf) Gibbs of Red Lake; son, Jon Prentice of Red Lake; brothers, Burton Dean (Terri) Gibbs of Minneapolis, Leslie (Renee) Gibbs of Duluth, Mike (Cher) Defoe of Wyoming, Minn., Patrick (Lisa) Defoe of Red Lake, John (Ruth) Atkinson of Walker, Robert Gibbs III of Ponemah and Ramsey Gibbs of Ponemah; sisters, Anita Gibbs of Battle River, Minn., Roberta (Kevin) Major of Canada and Renola Maxwell Gibbs of Red Lake; grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Paul Gibbs, Richard Lee "Ticker" Defoe of Red Lake and Jerome "Sonny" McKay of Ft. Totten, N.D.; sister, Romona McKay; paternal grandparents, Robert and Elizabeth (Kingbird) Gibbs; maternal grandparents, Felix and Margaret Gurneau; and a niece.
