A steady rain did not dampen the spirits of the Bemidji boys golfers who hosted their annual invitational Monday at the Bemidji Town & Country Club.

"It has to rain long and hard to stop a golf meet," said BHS coach Seth Knudson.

The 19 complete teams were greeted by a steady rain when the meet began at 9 a.m. and the precipitation continued until about noon. The rain, however, stopped for the final few hours of the competition and the golfers could finish their rounds in more comfortable conditions.

"My only concern during the morning was a thunderstorm," Knudson said. "We will play through rain but lightning will get you off a golf course in a hurry."

The Lumberjacks finished fourth in the field with a composite score of 327. Roseau took the crown with 314 while Detroit Lakes and Staples-Motley shared second at 316.

"The scores were higher than I thought they would be," Knudson said. "The course was playing tough and when you combine the fast greens and Monday's pin placements with the weather it was a tough test of golf.

"The course was in great shape and, even though it was raining, I think the greens were faster than some of the kids are used to playing," the coach added.

Leading the Lumberjacks was Kaleb Hanson who shot 38-41-79 on the par-36-36 BT&CC layout. Zack Israelson of Staples-Motley was medalist with a 74.

"I was very pleased with Kaleb's round," Knudson said. "He shot 89 on Saturday at Moorhead but he carded a 79 on Monday. That is a great improvement."

Trey Dale had a double-bogey 6 on his last hole, No, 18, and finished at 81. Kodi Craft shot 83 and Jordan Manick 84 while Max Hazelton and Elliot Leinen carded 86s.

"This was our one opportunity to play at home and I was hoping that we might have shot a little lower than we did," Knudson said. "We're capable of better scores but, overall, we hung in there and finished fourth.

"All of the kids have posted scores in the 70s this year and if we can become more consistent and put everything together at the section meet, who knows what can happen. We're getting better and we still have time to prepare for the rest of the season."
