Gwen G. Engen, 79, of Detroit Lakes, died Saturday, January 24, 2009 at Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes.

Gwen Horgan was born to Otto and Emma (Qualley) Horgen on July 15, 1929 in Warren, Minn., where she grew up and received her education, graduating from Warren High School. On June 20, 1948 she married Richard A. Engen in Warren, where they made their home until moving to Detroit Lakes in 1957.

Gwen enjoyed her role as a mother and homemaker. In 1973, Gwen was very instrumental in the forming of the Senior Citizens Nutrition Center in Detroit Lakes. She worked as the site manager at the center for 25 years. She was also very active at First Lutheran Church, serving in many capacities, including Church Council, Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher, as well as wedding coordinator. She was also a hall monitor and playground supervisor at Lincoln Elementary School in Detroit Lakes.

In addition, Gwen was also active with meals on wheels, hairdressing at St. Mary's Nursing Center, and gave countless people rides to church. She also loved time spent with family and attending her grandchildren's activities.

Surviving Gwen are her son, Darrell (Cindy) Engen, of Fargo; three daughters, Gwenyth (Kevin) Bauer of Cambridge, Minn., Mary (John) Brink of Bemidji and Kathryn (Cal) Mayfield, of Frazee; nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Her parents and husband Richard (1986) preceded her in death.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 26 at West-Kjos Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes, continuing Tuesday for one hour prior to the start of services at the church.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27 at First Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes, with the Rev. David Peterson officiating.

Casket bearers will be Cal Mayfield, John Brink, Kevin Bauer, Brian Mayfield, Eric Bauer, Nick Engen and John Brink.

Honorary casket bearers will be Heather Bauer, Heidi Bauer, Erin Brink, Sarah Longfors and Kaitlin Engen.

Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes.
