Greyhounds outrun weary Lumberjacks in girls basketball

The Bemidji girls basketball team has been busy since opening the new year on Jan. 5 at Detroit Lakes.

Thursday night the Lumberjacks played their fourth game in eight days and the rigorous schedule has taken a toll.

"Our legs are shot. We need a break," said BHS coach Rick Kehoe.

Duluth East took full advantage of Bemidji's tired legs as the Greyhounds played an up-tempo brand of basketball and cruised to a 74-53 victory.

The Lumberjacks stayed with Duluth East through much the first half and trailed only 23-17 with 5:45 remaining in the stanza. At that juncture, however, the Greyhounds lived up to their nickname as they ran the floor nonstop and pushed their lead to 36-19 with 1:50 to play.

BHS closed the half with five straight points as Jenna Sagedahl drained a free throw and Jess Yost and Cheyenne Woods both converted baskets to bring Bemidji within 36-24 at intermission.

Yost had nine points at the break and Woods scored six. Greta Steever finished the first half with five points.

Defensively the Jacks couldn't stop Duluth East forward Alex Freeman as she scored 16 points in the opening 18 minutes, six of them coming courtesy of two baskets from 3-point land.

Hampering Bemidji's comeback attempt in the second half was the loss of Caitlin Hadrava who sustained a foot injury in the first half and was unable to return.

"We're not that deep and injuries and sickness have hurt us," Kehoe said. "Duluth East exposed us with its speed. We're not a very quick team and we have to be technically sound at all times to stay with the better teams on our schedule."

The visitors opened the second stanza on a 13-4 run and with 12:37 to play in the game Bemidji trailed 49-28. The Lumberjacks were able to draw within 55-39 midway through the half but whenever Duluth East needed to answer the Greyhounds did.
