Gregory Edmund Gits
Gregory Edmund Gits, 78, of Bemidji, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2008, at Neilson Place in Bemidji.
The funeral will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at St. Philip's Catholic Church in Bemidji with Rev. Vincent Miller officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Military Honors will be provided by the Ralph Gracie Post No. 14 of the American Legion in Bemidji. Burial will be in the Holy Redeemer's Catholic Church Cemetery in Marshall, Minn., under the direction of the Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji.
The pallbearers will be Maddison Gits, Colten Gits, Hunter Gits, Alex Gits, Benjamin Nelson and Cody Nelson.
He was born on April 27, 1930, to Edmund and Theresa (Honsa) Gits in Minneota, Minn. He graduated from Marshall High School in 1948. He attended St. John's University, South Dakota State University, University of Minnesota and Bemidji State University. He joined the National Guard, in 1950 during the Korean Conflict. He became a 1st Sgt. EM, and later rose to 1st Lt. He served for 21 years in the National Guard. He married Delphine Ochocki in 1951; she died in 1952. He married Margaret Elizabeth Ford in August 1955 in Marshall. He was employed at Chatechnical Guild. He owned Gits Sales Company and G&R Distributing in Redwood Falls, Minn., for 17 years. He also owned Gregory's clothing in Worthington, St. James and Pipestone and was a long-standing instructor at Bemidji Technical College. After retiring in 1991, he worked for the Red Lake Indian Reservation setting up a successful GED program. He held memberships in Oblate January 2000, Knights of Columbus, Legion Club and the City Council of Marshall. He was a Eucharistic Minister for many years and a Friend of Bill W. for more than three decades.
He is survived by his children, Michael G. (Julie) Serlet of Boulder, Colo., Judy M. Klaers (Pat) of Fargo, N.D., Charles J. Gits (Kim) of Edina, Minn., Helen P. Yarmoska (Wayne) of Edina and John G. Gits (Lisa) of Madison, Wis.; sisters, Elizabeth "Betty" Gits of St. Paul, Minn., Kathleen (Donald) Hamerlinck of St. Cloud, Minn., and Pauline (Howard) Bennett of Marshall; son-in-law, 12 grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Delphine, his wife of 53 years; Margaret; and daughter, Elizabeth "Iffa" Nelson.
