For the record, Bemidji won the boys title at Saturday's Lions Invitational indoor track and field meet at the Bemidji State University Rec Center and the Lumberjacks girls squad placed second.

In the minds of the BHS head coaches, however, team scores did not mean as much as individual performances. And both girls coach Chris Lehman and boys coach Steve Sneide were ecstatic following the competition.

"I'm very pleased with what I saw, especially from the younger kids," Lehman said. "Everybody went out and competed very well. This group of kids has a great attitude and building team cohesiveness is something we want to do. (Saturday) you could see that support.

"It takes a little extra effort to cheer for a teammate but we did that today and our times reflected the teamwork," Lehman added.

Sneide echoed those sentiments.

"It was a great first meet," Sneide said. "All the young kids stepped up and showed that this team has a ton of potential."

Warroad took the girls crown with 177 points while Bemidji was second with 173.5. Also competing were Ottertail Central (79.5), Clearbrook-Gonvick (28) and Grand Rapids (21).

Grand Rapids competed shorthanded, however, as the school's boys basketball team was playing in the state Class AAA basketball tournament Saturday night and many of the athletes headed to the Twin Cities to cheer their cagers.

The Lumberjacks captured the boys title with 212.5 points. Ottertail Central (112), Warroad (99), Grand Rapids (76) and Clearbrook-Gonvick (22.5) trailed.

In the girls competition BHS won the 4x800 (Bailey Drewes, Kim Truedson, Amber Solheim and Amber Peterson) in 10:43.58, was second and third in the 4x200 and took the top two spots in the 4x400. Teaming to win the 4x400 were freshmen Danielle Gronhovd, Steph Frey, Peterson and Solheim with a time of 4:43.80.

"We have a very talented group of freshmen and Saturday's meet showed that we will have the depth to fill many lineup spots," Lehman said. "That performance by our all-freshmen 4x400 team was very impressive."

Selina Gilbertson won the shot putt (30-6.5) while Drewes captured the 1600 with a time of 5:34.85 and Kim Truedson was second in 5:56.62. Also placing second were Solheim in the 800 and Laura Edwards in the triple jump (31-5.75).

Contributing third place finishes were Blake Bardwell in the 400, Josie Spry in the long jump and Peterson in the 800. Placing fourth were Nicolette Wilcox in the 55 hurdles, Olivia Hruby in the 55 dash, Rachael Becker in the 400 and Gronhovd in the 1600.

"We had many fast times and many personal records and that is great for the first meet of the season," Lehman said. "Everybody was excited about their times and distances. This was a great way to open the season."

In the boys competition BHS won the 4x800 (Matt Lee, Scott Hulsebus, Isak Sommer and Tanner Asper) in 10:43.58, was second in the 4x200 and finished 1-2 in the 4x400.

Combining for the winning time of 3:47.51 in the 4x400 were Lee, Alex Schoenberger, Jake Urban and John Buckanaga.

Individually, Brady Schmidt won the 55 in 6.99, John Buckanaga captured the 1600 in 4:51.37, Schoenberger set the pace in the 800 with a time of 2:04.99, Grant Mitchell won the 200 in 25.55, Zac Declusian won the high jump at 5-6, Dan Kilday captured the triple jump at 34-7.5 and Dan Clemenson claimed the 3200 in 10:57.05.

Placing second for the Jacks were Peter Humenick in the 400, Richard Seado in the 1600, Kevin Nelson in the long jump and Joshua Smith in the shot put.

Adding thirds were Mitchell in the 400, Lee in the 800, Devin Danielson in the 3200, Jon Henry in the high jump, Eric Calligan in the shot put and Kilday in the long jump.

"We had a great season-opening meet and the best thing that came out of it was the way our younger kids performed," Sneide said. "It turns out we have more depth than I expected. The young kids showed that they are the real deal and will push our older kids."
