Grand Rapids deal Jacks softball team a section setback

The Bemidji softball team wasted an opportunity to solidify a high seed in the section meet Thursday as the Lumberjacks committed six errors and handed Grand Rapids an 8-2 victory in Bemidji.

Earlier this spring the Jacks dismantled the Thunderhawks 11-2 in Grand Rapids and 14-5 in Cloquet.

"We set the tone with our errors and misplays right from the start," said BHS coach Brad Takkunen.

Grand Rapids took advantage of Bemidji's defensive mistakes to score five runs in the opening inning. Another error in the second stanza handed the Thunderhawks their sixth run and the damage had been done.

"This was a 3-point game in terms of section seeding that we were counting on," Takkunen said. "Hopefully, we can still claim that third position despite losing these three points."

The Jacks committed an error on the opening play and a single combined with a poor decision on a fielder's choice attempt that resulted in everybody being safe loaded the bases. A double knocked in the game's first two runs and the visitors were off and running.

"We could have gotten out of that first inning without giving up a run but defensively we couldn't make the plays to get the outs," Takkunen said. "It's too bad we played this way in our last home regular-season game.

BHS trailed 8-0 before finding the scoreboard in the sixth. Grand Rapids made one error and it led to the run as Jineane Williams reached on an infield boot and scored courtesy of singles by Janelle Williams and Jess Yost.

Laura Clark singled and Taylor McLean doubled to produce a run in the seventh.

"This was just an ugly game and one that we need to move past very quickly," Takkunen said.

Bemidji concludes its regular season Saturday in Detroit Lakes where it will face Thief River Falls at 12:30 p.m. and the home team at 2 p.m.

The section seedings also will be decided this weekend and Takkunen believes that Brainerd will gain the top seed and Elk River will be ranked second. He is hoping that the Jacks will be rated third and Big Lake fourth.
