Golf: Hafdal leads Bemidji State to fourth at St. Cloud State
ST. CLOUD –Tied for sixth at one-under-par 71 to open the final round of the 2012 SCSU Husky Invitational, Bemidji State sophomore John Hafdalfinished the event locked in a tie for first place at 144/E after carding a one-over-par 73 Monday at the par-72, 6,766-yard St. Cloud Country Club.
The sophomore’s best performance of the season not only placed Hafdal among five players that tied for the top spot on the leader board, but also led the Bemidji State men’s golf team to a fourth-place finish in the 16-team event.
Tournament officials broke the tie for medalist honors based on the final-round performance of the participants tied for first. Minnesota State Mankato’s Ross Miller earned the individual title due to his two-under-par 70 on the final day of competition.
St. Cloud State led from wire-to-wire following a 288 Sunday. The Huskies posted a 302 (590/+14) to edge Minnesota State by three strokes (295-298—593/+17) to the team championship.
Bemidji State (297-302—599/+23) finished nine shots out of title contention in fourth behind SCSU, MSU and University of Manitoba (296-301—597/+21), which is not a member of the NCAA and does not figure into the official results in the eyes of the organizing body.
Other Bemidji State participants that figured into the team score were:Brett Musich, who carded a 72-75—147 (+3) to tie for sixth andNathan Brown andDerek Rileyeach posted back-to-back 77s to tie for 33rd(154/+10).
In addition,Andrew Benson, fired 78-73—151 (+7) to tie for 19th.
