GOLF: BSU’s Benson finishes 39th at State Amateur

GOLDEN VALLEY — Andrew Benson of the BSU men’s golf team finished in a tie for 39th at the three-day Minnesota State Amateur golf tournament which was hosted this week by the Golden Valley Golf Club.

Benson was BSU’s captain last year and opened his tournament with a round of 77 and finished with rounds of 75 and 78. Among the other golfers shooting 230 were Johnny Larson of Springfield and A.J. Oster of Ham Lake. Larson and Oster will be in Bemidji next week as they are participating in the Birchmont.

At last year’s Birchmont, Oster finished second, losing to Bill Carlson of Fargo in the Men’s Championship final. Larson, who won the Birchmont crown in 2007 and 2011, claimed last year’s consolation crown.

Jesse Bull of Golden Valley won the State Amateur as a birdie on the 54th hole gave him a 212 total and a one-shot victory over Erik Christopherson who plays out of Baker National in Medina.
