GOLF: BSU takes 8th in spring season opener

WAYNE, Neb. – Andrew Ellefsen carded a two-under-par 70 to lead the Bemidji State men’s golf team to a seventh place finish in the final day of the Wayne State Spring Invitational.

The Beavers finished the two-day, 36-hole event with 604 (304-300) at the par-72, 6,407-yard Wayne Golf Club.

Bemidji State finished 15 strokes off the lead set by Minnesota State Mankato, which won the event with a nine-over-par 585 (290-295). Nebraska-Kearney completed the invitational four shots back in second place with 589 (300-289) after a field-low 289 (+1) on day 2.

Ellefsen’s 70 in the final day of competition propelled him out of a tie for 47th place at +7 (79) after Friday’s opening round and into a tie for 12th place with six other competitors. He finished the event nine strokes off the lead with a 149 (70-70) at five-over-par.

Nebraska-Kearney’s Michael Colgate took medalist honors firing back-to-back rounds of 70 to finish the event at four-under-par (140) to hold a two-shot lead over the rest of the field.

In addition to Ellefsen, BSU’s John Hafdal finished tied for 25th at seven-over-par (151), Nathan Brown tied for 33rd with 153 (+9), Brett Musich recorded rounds of 77 and 77 to tie for 35th at +10 and Andrew Benson rounded of the Beavers’ team score tied for 46th at +12 (156).

Bemidji State will continue its spring season April 6-7 when it travels to Moravia, Iowa, and the Honey Creek Resort on Rathburn Lake to compete in the Upper Iowa Spring Invitational.

The event was pushed back a day and moved south from Waterloo, Iowa, in an effort to find a playable course and warmer weather.
