GIRLS TENNIS: Eveleth-Gilbert hands Jacks first loss of season
BEMIDJI -- The four-match winning streak to open the year was snapped Thursday as Eveleth-Gilbert handed the Bemidji girls tennis team a 5-2 loss at the high school courts.
Eveleth-Gilbert is ranked in the top 10 in the Class A division and, according to BHS coach Mark Fodness, has a very strong lineup, especially in singles.
That strength was evident Thursday as the visitors swept the singles matches, taking three of the four battles in straight sets.
The Lumberjacks won two of the three doubles matches. At first doubles Annika Johnson and Olivia Dickinson posted a 6-0, 6-4 victory and the second doubles tandem of Jenna Lee and Kenzie Schultz earned a 6-2, 6-4 win.
McKayla Beaulieu and Erin Edlund dropped a 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 decision at third doubles.
Falling in singles action were Claudia Bellew, Alexis Konecne, Abby Kelm and Nicolette Roy.
"We did many good things in the match but, at the same time, I don't think we had our 'A' game by any means," Fodness said. "I think this was a good wake-up call for us that we need to play with intensity and as a team if we're going to win these matches.
"This outcome gives us some definite things to work on and, hopefully, we'll take a step forward and learn from our experience."
Bemidji (4-1) returns to duty Tuesday when it faces Detroit Lakes and East Grand Forks in Detroit Lakes.
