Girls tennis: Bemidji thumps Grand Rapids 6-1
GRAND RAPIDS — Just as it has for the majority of the month of September, the Bemidji girls tennis team displayed dominance in a 6-1 win over Grand Rapids Tuesday in Grand Rapids.
“The team challenged themselves to avoid a letdown tonight,” Bemidji head coach Mark Fodness said. “They did a great job of competing at a high level.”
Claudia Bellew, Alexis Konecne, and Abbie Kelm were all victorious in two sets and Sarah McNallan delivered a three-set victory to complete the sweep in singles for the Lumberjacks.
“Our singles players played really well and kept pressure on the opponents,” Fodness said. “We struggled a little bit in fourth singles, but Sarah fought back and won it in the third set.”
Annika Johnson and Olivia Dickinson defeated Taylor Kane and Mariah Linder in two sets. Kayla Snell and Nicolette Roy handed the same fate to Mary-Kate Drobnick and Taylor Wochnick.
Grand Rapids’ lone victory came from Carlie Ridgeway and Maria Stampohar who posted a three-set win over Mackenzie Schultz and Jenna Lee at second doubles.
“Our second doubles team lost their first set and first match of the year today,” Fodness said. “Sometimes it is not all that bad to take a loss somewhere in the season to take that pressure off. I think Jenna and Kenzie will respond with some great tennis next week.”
Bemidji (13-1) will look to continue its success next Tuesday, Oct. 1, when it will be in East Grand Forks.
