Girls tennis: Bemidji places second at Hibbing tournament
HIBBING — Individual titles by the second and third doubles teams carried the Bemidji girls tennis team to second place Saturday at the 8-team Hibbing Invitational.
Kenzie Schultz and Jenna Lee never dropped a set on way to the second doubles championship and the Jacks third doubles tandem of Nicolette Roy and Kayla Snell cruised through its first two opponents and then stopped Grand Rapids 6-3, 5-7, (10-5) in the title match.
“Against Grand Rapids Kayla and Nicolette stepped it up under pressure in a third set tiebreak and came away with the win,” said BHS coach Mark Fodness.
“At second doubles Kenzie and Jenna were tough all day. Their biggest win was in the finals when they fell behind 3-0 in the second set and came storming back and played a string of really impressive games and won 6-3 over Stillwater,” Fodness added.
Placing second were Annika Johnson and Olivia Dickinson at first doubles while third-place points were contributed by Alexis Konecne at second singles and Abby Kelm at third singles.
Finishing as consolation champs were Claudia Bellew at first singles and Sarah McNallan at fourth singles.
