GIRLS SOCCER: Bemidji shuts out Moorhead 1-0
MOORHEAD — Maea Wall’s first-half goal and Casey Palmer’s eight saves were enough for a big Bemidji victory Thursday, as the Lumberjacks defeated Moorhead 1-0.
“This is a big win for us,” BHS head coach Kelly Schoonover said. “Moorhead is a section opponent. They’re always a very difficult team to play, especially on our field. I can’t remember the last time we beat them, especially on their home field.”
The Lumberjacks (7-6-0) scored early against the Spuds (7-5-0) when Wall scored at the 20 minute mark. Lydia Bitter had the assist.
From there, it was a battle.
Palmer came up big time and again for the Lumberjacks to preserve the shutout, including stopping a Moorhead penalty shot in the 60th minute.
“She was outstanding,” Schoonover said. “She really was the key player to keep us in the game.”
The Lumberjacks also got great team play, especially from their midfielders.
“The girls played strong and hard... we really played well together,” Schoonover said. “We really worked on winning the ball back at midfield. It allowed us to have more offensive opportunities today than we have gotten in the past few games.”
Despite the win Bemidji did suffer some injuries to a few key players.
Jillian Ricci suffered a shoulder injury and Mackenzie Hietala re-aggrivated a nagging groin pain; both may be out of commission for a week or so.
The Lumberjacks, though, have a week to rest up. They return to the pitch next Thursday at Crookston.
“We’re happy with the win, but we’re a bit sore and tired,” Schoonover said. “We’ll be glad to have that week off.”
