Girls soccer: Bemidji is ready for postseason
GRAND RAPIDS — The Bemidji girls soccer team faces a daunting task when it begins its postseason Thursday as the Lumberjacks, after playing a Class A regular season schedule, have been elevated to the Class 2A ranks and will open their section tournament at Elk River.
BHS was seeded sixth in Section 8-2A and will face the third-ranked Elks in Elk River. If the Lumberjacks can win that game they will head south again on Saturday, either to No. 2 Rogers (10-6) or No. 7 Buffalo (3-8-4).
Bemidji capped its regular season Monday with a 4-1 victory at Grand Rapids. The win gave the Lumberjacks a 10-6 mark heading into the postseason. Elk River will bring a 7-6-3 record into Thursday’s game.
“It will be a tough game for us but I think we’re peaking at the right time and we’ll be ready,” said BHS coach Kelly Schoonover whose team ended the regular season with a four-game winning streak. “We’ll need everybody to play well but we’re excited and confident. We’ll be ready to go on Thursday,” the coach added.
Rachel Holm scored Bemidji’s first two goals Monday and Haley Hinners upped the lead to 3-0 midway through the second half.
After the home team drew within 3-1, Rachel Bitter capped the scoring with an unassisted tally at the 67-minute mark.
Bitter also assisted on Holm’s first goal and Wall contributed an assist on Hinners’ marker.
Casey Palmer tended the net and finished with eight saves.
