Girls hockey: Warroad nips Bemidji 2-1 in overtime
WARROAD — Megan Dondelinger forced overtime with a goal in the final four minutes of regulation but Warroad scored the game-winner 12 seconds into the extra session and defeated the Bemidji girls hockey team 2-1 Saturday in Warroad.
The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the first period when Danika Huerd beat BHS goalie Leighton Rockensock six minutes into the contest. Rockensock and the defense did not allow another goal during regulation, however.
Neither team could find the scoreboard in the second period and Warroad’s 1-0 lead held until Dondelinger and Mackenzie Hietala worked a 2-on-1 late in the third period. Hietala eventually passed to Dondelinger and the junior beat Warrior goalie Emma Brunelle for the tying tally.
The overtime did not last long, however, as Mara Gardner scored an unassisted goal 12 seconds into the extra time.
Brunelle stopped 18 BHS shots, including 11 in the third period.
The game also featured 16 minor penalties, including nine assessed to the Lumberjacks.
