GIRLS HOCKEY: Lack of offense hurts Bemidji in 3-0 loss to Roseau
BEMIDJI — Roseau controlled the puck for the majority of the night in a 3-0 win over Bemidji Tuesday at the Bemidji Community Arena.
Roseau struck quickly as Sarina Goos poked the puck away from Bemidji’s defensive players and created an easy breakaway. Her shot went right between the legs of Bemidji goaltender Leighton Rockensock to take a 1-0 lead after just 16 seconds of play.
“It is always tough when something happens that quick,” Bemidji head coach Jackie Robertson said. “It set the momentum, but I thought the girls bounced back pretty well after that.”
The Rams maintained a one-goal lead throughout the first period, even though the Lumberjacks (4-10-2) had three power play opportunities.
“Our power play was very sloppy,” Robertson said. “Against a good team like Roseau, things need to be spot on.”
Roseau outshot Bemidji 10-5 in the opening period.
The Rams doubled their lead to 2-0 late in the second period when Maddy Helgeson’s shot found the upper right corner of the net.
Just two minutes later, Mary Przekwas added a third goal to give Roseau a comfortable 3-0 lead through two periods of play.
The Lumberjacks did not get a shot on net in the third period.
Roseau finished the game with a 36-12 advantage in the shot column.
Rams goalie Jenna Baumgartner earned a shutout with 12 saves.
Rockensock turned away 33 shots on the night for Bemidji.
Before the game, the Lumberjacks and their fans honored their four seniors: Savanna Hanson, Jordyn Follis, Kelsey Isaacson, and Hanna Olson.
“They are four really great kids,” Robertson said. “It is going to be said to see them leave, but luckily we have a lot of games left this season, as we had our senior night early.”
