Girls hockey: Bemidji's season ends with 5-0 loss at Buffalo in Section 8-2A quarterfinals
BUFFALO — The Bemidji girls hockey team saw its season come to an end Saturday when the Lumberjacks lost 5-0 at Buffalo in the quarterfinals of the Section 8-2A playoffs.
BHS, which was the section’s seventh seed, finished its season 8-11-5 while second-seeded Buffalo will take a 13-12-1 into Tuesday’s semifinal against No. 3 Sartell. Sartell eliminated sixth-seeded Moorhead 2-0 Saturday night.
In Saturday’s upper-bracket quarterfinals top-seeded Roseau blitzed No. 8 River Lakes 6-0 and fourth-ranked St. Cloud escaped No. 5 North Wright County 3-2 in four overtimes.
On Tuesday St. Cloud will make the long trip to Roseau.
Tuesday’s winners will advance to Friday’s Section 8-2A championship game.
In Saturday’s loss Bemidji managed 15 shots while Buffalo tested Jacks goalie Leighton Rockensock 35 times.
The home team scored all the goals it would need in the opening period when Madi Jewell beat Rockensock at 8:42 and again at 16:54.
Goals by Abby Halluska and Ashley Efferts gave the Bison a 4-0 lead after two periods and Kirsten Olson capped the victory with a goal midway through the third stanza.
Bemidji’s roster included seniors Savanna Hanson, Jordyn Follis, Kelsey Isaacson and Hanna Olson.
