INTERNATIONAL FALLS – Six different players scored for the Bemidji High School girls hockey team Tuesday, including a hat trick from Karleigh Wolkerstorfer, as the Lumberjacks earned their second win of the season with a 9-1 rout of International Falls.
The Lumberjacks (2-5-4) scored five times in the first period and twice each in the second and third periods to pour it on the outmatched Broncos (3-7).
In the first period, junior Savanna Hanson kicked things off with the first goal at the 4:35 mark, while Kelsey Isaacson scored her first-ever varsity goal on the power play at 9:42.
Jasmin Yerbich also scored her first-ever varsity goal in the first period, scoring at the 12:56 mark.
Wolkerstorfer and Katie Pogue also tallied goals in the opening frame, while Rachel Holm, Heather Olson, Karlee Tower, Allie Heifort, Mackenzie Hietala and Jordyn Follis added their names to the scoresheet as well with assists.
“The girls played hard right off the bat,” BHS head coach Bob Brink said as to why the Jacks played so well. “They just took control early and gained some confidence from that.”
In the second period, Heifort scored first while Wolkerstorfer added her second to make it 7-0 BHS; Erin Booth added an assist on Wolkerstorfer’s goal.
In the third period, it was all but over and Pogue scored her second at the 4:30 mark and Wolkerstorfer earned the hat trick at 14:08.
International Falls’ Lexie Edwards scored with just over a minute to go to break up the shutout by BHS goaltender Leighton Rockensock.
Rockensock made 16 saves on 17 shots. International Falls goalie Marissa Kerry made 27 saves but faced 36 Lumberjacks shots.
The Lumberjacks return to action Thursday when they face Detroit Lakes at the BCA at 7 p.m.
