CROOKSTON – Bemidji finally earned its first win of the season Tuesday night.

The Lumberjacks survived two separate comebacks from Crookston – including a late game-tying goal in the third period – and rallied to defeat the Pirates 5-4 in overtime. The Lumberjacks outshot the Pirates 35-20 in the game.

“Everyone’s feeling pretty good,” BHS head coach Bob Brink said of the Jacks’ first win. “We probably should have had our first win a while ago, but our girls played hard tonight and I’m very proud of them.”

Bemidji (1-5-4) got on the board early in the first period with a score from Karleigh Wolkerstorfer.

Wolkerstorfer put the Lumberjacks ahead 2-0 with an unassisted tally at the 8:09 mark of the second period.

But Crookston (4-4) came back with a vengeance. The Pirates scored three straight goals on the power play – two from Brianna Breiland and another from Sabrina Delorme – to take a quick 3-2 lead into the third frame.

“In the second period we started to get a little sloppy there,” Brink said. “We had lots of penalties and lost composure a little bit. But the girls did a good job of holding them off in the third period.”

Indeed, BHS scored the next two goals to take a 4-3 lead, courtesy of Rachel Holm and Erin Booth.

Crookston’s Lizzy Awender tied the game at the 14:34 mark to force overtime, but the Lumberjacks pulled out the victory thanks to Mackenzie Hietala’s unassisted score at the 3:07 mark of overtime.

“It was huge to tie the game in the third period,” Brink said. “That gave us a lot of momentum for the win. It’s a big win for us.”

The Lumberjacks hope to keep their winning streak alive Saturday when they host Warroad at the Bemidji Community Arena.
