GIRLS BASKETBALL: Thief River Falls pulls away down the stretch to avoid major upset

BEMIDJI — Bemidji threatened to pull off a major upset Monday, but fell short to Thief River Falls 79-61.

With the win, the Prowlers move to 15-1 on the season.

Thief River Falls held a slim 40-35 lead at the half.

The Lumberjacks (3-15) trailed by just a point midway through the second half, but let the game slip away in the final ten minutes.

“We had plenty of opportunities,” Bemidji head coach Rick Kehoe said. “We played them tough for three quarters of the game.”

“We just had a drought where we could not score for five or six possessions,” he added. “They really made us pay by scoring on each of those possessions.”

Brook Yaggie connected on six three-pointers to lead the Prowlers with 26 points.

Bemidji’s offense featured a balanced scoring attack with five players in double figures. Alexa Greendahl led the way with 13 points and Kelsey Olson, Casey Palmer, Maura Chadwick and Cheyenne Woods joined her in double figures.

The 18-point loss was a vast improvement for the Lumberjacks from the first meeting between the two teams when the Prowlers won 77-41 in Thief River Falls.

Kehoe called his team’s effort one of the best this season and was pleased with the results following a 52-50 loss to East Grand Forks last Friday.

“We just cannot get over the hump,” Kehoe said. “It would have been great to get the win, but it was good to see the girls bounce back like this after a tough loss.”
