GIRLS BASKETBALL: Second-half lapse proves costly as Bemidji falls at Buffalo
BUFFALO – No team could use a break more than the Bemidji girls basketball team.
Friday the Lumberjacks played on even terms most of the game but a lapse in the second half proved costly as they lost 64-44 to Buffalo.
Friday’s setback was Bemidji’s eighth in as many outings. BHS was trailing 40-34 with 9:30 to play but three minutes later the Bison (4-4) were on top 50-34.
“We were down by six points and then on our next six trips down the floor we had a run of turnovers and all of a sudden Buffalo had a 16-point lead,” said Jacks coach Rick Kehoe.
“I think that if you take away a three-minute stretch in that second half it’s a 4-point game that goes down to the wire,” the coach continued. “Except for that stretch we were in this game. What we need to do is make good on-court decisions and take care of the basketball for an entire game. ”
Jess Yost paced the offense with 22 points, nailing eight field goals (including two from 3-point land). As a team, however, BHS made only 14 field goals.
“We had trouble shooting,” Kehoe said. “We had the open shots but we couldn’t hit them,” Kehoe said.
Alexa Greendahl added seven points but no other Lumberjack had more than five.
Bemidji is off until Dec. 28 when it travels to St. Peter for a tournament. The Lumberjacks will open against the host school at 3:45 p.m.
The other first-round matchup sees Hutchinson facing New Richland. On Dec. 29 the first round losers will square off at 2 p.m. and the winners will play at 6 p.m.
“We need a break,” Kehoe said. “Right now the girls need some time away from basketball.”
