Girls basketball: Cardinals hand loss to tired Jacks
With two games remaining in the regular season, the Bemidji girls basketball team is anxiously awaiting the temporary break between games.
Saturday at home the Lumberjacks had Alexandria, which entered the game with a 16-3 record, on the ropes. But in the final seven minutes the Cardinals took advantage of Bemidji's weary legs and short bench and eventually posted a 56-45 victory.
Lauren Trumm stuck the dagger in the Jacks as she stole the ball on three consecutive Bemidji possessions and transformed the turnovers into three fast-break buckets.
Those points were part of an 8-0 run which turned a 35-35 tie into a 43-35 Alexandria lead. And Bemidji, which suited only eight players, never caught up.
When everyone is healthy BHS dresses 10 but Cori Treat is out of the lineup because of a sore back and Caitlin Hadrava has missed the past few games with an injured foot.
It is not known when either player will return.
"That series with the steals and the fast breaks was the end of the game," said BHS coach Rick Kehoe. "We were tired and when we get tired we make mental mistakes. And we made more than our share of mistakes down the stretch."
The first half was played on even terms and featured five lead changes. At its conclusion Bemidji led 23-21 on the strength of a 7-1 run which featured five points by Jess Yost and Jessa Lusby's bucket from the side.
No more than three points separated the teams during the second half until Trumm took matters into her own hands with the steals and the fast breaks.
The Cardinals widened their lead during the final five minutes and Bemidji fell below .500 at 10-11 for the first time this winter.
"Everybody played hard but we have to be healthy to stay with a team like Alexandria for an entire game," Kehoe said. "And we're not healthy right now."
Bemidji will end its regular season Tuesday at Moorhead and Friday at home against Duluth Denfeld.
