CLOQUET — Bemidji overcame a poor first half and played lock-down defense in the second half but it wasn’t enough to topple Watertown-Mayer Friday night in the Wood City Tournament in Cloquet, falling 54-48.

The Lumberjacks (3-4) were outscored 45-23 in the first half but held the Royals (5-3) to just nine second-half points in a comeback attempt.

With just 2:30 to go in the game the Lumberjacks had cut the Royals’ lead to just 3, 49-46, but they got no closer.

“We couldn’t hit buckets,” BHS head coach Rick Kehoe said. “We missed a bunch of free throws down the stretch, too.”

The Lumberjacks went 9-for-16 (56 percent) from the line while the Royals were 12-for-21 (57 percent).

Kelsey Olson led BHS with 11 points while Alexa Greendahl and Casey Palmer also reached double figures with 10 apiece.

Kristen Klitzke led Watertown-Mayer with 20 points while Chelsea Wandersee added 14.

The Lumberjacks return to the court today for another tournament game against Browerville.
