Girls basketball: Bemidji falls 59-35 at Cloquet

CLOQUET — The Bemidji girls basketball team once again had bad luck in Cloquet.

Despite trailing just 23-18 at halftime the Lumberjacks lost their way midway through the second half and fell to hosts Cloquet 59-35 Saturday afternoon.

It was Bemidji’s third-straight loss — all three of which were in Cloquet. BHS (3-6) lost to Watertown-Meyer and Browerville at Cloquet’s Wood City Tournament last weekend.

“We hung with them for two-thirds of the game, but then the wheels just fell off,” BHS head coach Rick Kehoe said of Saturday’s game. “They had a 23-21 lead three minutes into the second half but that was it.”

Cloquet (7-2) pulled away with a big run and Bemidji never recovered.

“We gave up 22 offensive rebounds, which is obviously way too many,” Kehoe said. “That’s too many second chance buckets.”

No Bemidji players reached double figures; Amber Smith was BHS’s leading scorer with nine points.

Cloquet was led by post player Kassidy Steen, who scored 23 points.

The Lumberjacks return to action Tuesday for a game against Thief River Falls at the Sanford Center.
