BRAINERD — The Section 8-4A girls basketball seedings were announced Friday and, to no one’s surprise, Bemidji was ranked eighth and will open its postseason Tuesday at No. 1 St. Michael-Albertville.

The Lumberjacks, however, appear ready for the second season as they currently are playing their best basketball of the winter.

BHS closed the regular season Friday with a 63-58 victory at Brainerd. The Jacks were ahead 32-21 at intermission and held the Warriors off during the final minutes.

“Cheyenne Woods (Bemidji’s floor leader) fouled out with over eight minutes to play when we were up by five points,” said BHS coach Rick Kehoe. “Earlier in the season we might have collapsed if that had happened but Friday we didn’t. We finished strong and we earned the win.”

The Lumberjacks had three players in double figures, including Casey Palmer who drained eight baskets and collected 21 points.

Woods contributed 14 points before fouling out and Maura Chadwick added 11.

“On Friday we played with the most energy we have had all season,” Kehoe said. “It was a physical game and the officials let things go. But we adjusted and played hard.

“We played very well and we found a way to get a win.”

Bemidji will take a 5-20 record into the postseason.
