BEMIDJI — A lack of experienced depth has been an issue with the Bemidji girls basketball team all season and that flaw proved costly again Saturday when the Lumberjacks lost 69-58 at home to Alexandria.

BHS (3-15) dominated much of the first half and used its speed to open a 39-14 lead with three minutes to play in the opening stanza. During that stretch the Jacks were able to control both ends of the floor. On way to a 29-14 lead with three minutes to play in the first half, Bemidji’s defense forced 13 Alexandria turnovers and constantly pestered the Cardinals’ attack.

Spearheading the Lumberjacks’ offense were Kelsey Olson, Cheyenne Woods and Alexa Greendahl as they combined for 24 first-half points.

The pace of the opening half gradually took its toll on the Jacks, however, and during the final three minutes of the period Alexandria outscored the home team 8-2 and whittled its deficit to 31-22 at the break.

Alexandria continued to feed off that momentum early in the second stanza and five minutes into the second half the Cardinals’ comeback was complete.

Late in a 13-0 Alexandria run the visitors took a 39-37 lead when Brooke Heggie scored off a lob.

The Cardinals held a 43-42 advantage after the spurt and another 14-3 flurry a few minutes later upped Alexandria’s cushion to 57-45.

Woods finished with 19 points while Greendahl and Olson each scored 11. No other Lumberjack had more than five.

Alexandria was paced by guard Kendall Kohler who tallied 17.
