Gertrude Bernice "Gertie" Fjestad, 87, of Fergus Falls, Minn. formerly of Big Island Lake near Northome, Minn., died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008, at Pioneer Home in Fergus Falls.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hedemarken Lutheran Church in rural Carlisle, Minn., with the Rev. Marv Abrahamson officiating. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service, at the funeral home and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Hedemarken Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Carlisle. Olson Funeral Home in Fergus Falls assisted the family with arrangements.

She was born Sept. 22, 1921, to Berger and Marie (Nygaard) Aasen in Breckenridge, Minn. She moved to a farm in Sverdrup Township when she was a child. She attended School District 112 in Sverdrup Township. She was baptized and confirmed at Rindal Lutheran Church in rural Underwood. She worked at the Fergus Falls State Hospital and did housework in the area. On March 4, 1942, she married Morrill Fjestad at the Hedemarken Church parsonage in Rothsay, Minn. The couple farmed in Oscar Township until their retirement in 1976. They moved to Big Island Lake near Northome, where they lived until 1991, when they moved to Fergus Falls. In May 2007 she moved to Golden Manor Apartments. She became a resident of the Pioneer Home in 2008.

She was a member of Bethesda Lutheran in Mizpah, Minn. She was a member of Hedemarken Lutheran Church during her time in Oscar Township. Over the years she served as president of Ladies Aid, Homemakers, Craft Club, the Senior Citizens, the Steam Threshers Reunion at Rollag, and the Sons of Norway. She was also a Sunday school teacher. She enjoyed baking Norwegian delicacies, picking berries, gardening and canning, and doing handiwork. She had an appreciation for nature and the outdoors, enjoying camping, hiking, fishing, and feeding the deer and birds. She also enjoyed listening to music and accompanying her husband on his travels with the Carlisle Band.

She is survived by her son, Edward (Sharon), of Pelican Rapids, Minn.; three grandchildren; one great-grandson; sisters, Della Leitch of Underwood, Minn., Betty (Don) Torgerson of Richville, Minn. and Fran Sauer of Fergus Falls; brother, Norman "Bert" (Mae) Aasen of Underwood.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Morrill; daughter, Sandra Fjestad-Johnson and brothers, Roy, Orville, Morris and Herbert Aasen.
