Georgia Ann (Helgeson) Flaat, 78
Georgia Ann (Helgeson) Flaat, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away on Tuesday, January 27, at the age of 78, in Panama City Beach, Fla., formerly of Bemidji.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Messiah Lutheran Church in Panama City, Fla., with the Rev. Dennis Schmidt officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:30-7 p.m. Friday at the Southerland Family Funeral Home in Panama City, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.
She was born in Fisher, Minn., on January 26, 1931, to Chris and Gertrude (Olson) Helgeson. She attended grade school in Fisher and graduated from high school in Crookston, Minn. She graduated in 1953 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. She taught English at the high school in Hawley, Minn.
Georgia married O. Lowell Flaat in Crookston on Dec. 26, 1953, after completing her teaching contract. She joined him in Sandy Hook, N.J., where he was stationed with the U.S. Navy. After their time in New Jersey, they returned to the Bygland, Minn., area to operate the family farm and real estate business. They lived in the Bygland and East Grand Forks, Minn., area until 1997.
Georgia was very active in the Bygland Lutheran Church, various community activities and clubs. In 1997, they moved to the Bay Point Community in Panama City Beach in the winters and then spent the summers at their Lake Movil home in Bemidji.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, O. Lowell Flaat; four sons and their wives, David (Linda) of Panama City Beach, Stephen (Kathy) of Fisher, Daniel (Michelle) of Panama City Beach and Christopher (Ingrid) Redmond, Wash.; 11 grandchildren, Erik of Fort Polk, La., Mikael of Panama City Beach, Cole of Moorhead, Gavin of Sarasota, Fla., Connor of Fisher, Taylor and Ellie of Panama City Beach, Allina and Tagan, Mason and Lucy Georgia of Redmond; and a brother, John (Ruth) Helgeson of Walnut Creek, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Chris and Gertrude Helgeson.
Memorials may be designated to Emerald Coast Hospice of Panama City, Bygland Lutheran Church in Fisher or the Georgia and Lowell Flaat Computer Science Scholarship Fund at Concordia College in Moorhead.
