George Edward Johnson Jr., 79, of Laporte, died of heart surgery complications April 28, 2009, in Bethesda Hospital in St. Paul, Minn.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Calvary Evangelical Free Church with the Rev. Mark Widman officiating. A visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Dennis Funeral Home in Walker and one hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Kabekona Corners.
He was born Jan. 1, 1930, to George and Edith (VanVickle) Johnson in Walker, the eldest of 11 children. He was raised in Walker and remained in the area his whole life. He built his home in Laporte in 1967 and lived there until the time of his death. He had three children from his first marriage and then married Dorothy Troxel Dec. 24, 1960, who had two children from a previous marriage. Together they had five more, a total of 10, his, hers, and theirs. He enjoyed gardening, especially tomato plants and roses, hunting and fishing, trapping, chainsaw carving and guiding on Leech Lake. He also raced hobby stock cars. He enjoyed being around people.
He is survived by nine children; 22 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; seven brothers; a sister and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son and a grandson.
