Gary A. Austad, 59, of Detroit Lakes, MN, died Friday, October 10, 2008 from injuries received in an automobile accident near Waubun.

Gary Allen Austad was born to Ole and Ione (Weberg) Austad on July 27, 1949 in St. Paul. He was raised and educated in Oklee, Minn., graduating from Oklee High School in 1967. He served with the U.S. Army in Vietnam, with the First Infantry ("The Big Red One").

In 1970, Gary married Kathy Carriere, in Oklee. They lived in Thief River Falls, Minn., and later moved to Lake Park, where Gary worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad. He moved to Detroit Lakes, where he attended Northwest Technical College and then worked for the U.S. Postal Service, Sears and Lakes Homes. In 2003, Gary married Darlene Kunz in Detroit Lakes.

Gary was a member of the Lake Park American Legion, Jess-Omundson VFW Post in Detroit Lakes, the VFW Honor Guard and Color Guard, served as a cook for VFW activities and was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous, where he had achieved 24 years of sobriety.

Gary enjoyed spending time with his family, was an avid hunter, and enjoyed fishing, biking, helping others, doing volunteer work at the Becker County DAC, going to the casino, golfing, gardening, doing carpentry work and playing bingo at the VFW and Eagles.

Surviving Gary are his wife Darlene, of Detroit Lakes; son, Jamey Austad of Scandia, Minn.; stepchildren, Michael (Tammy) Kunz of Audubon, Kristie (John) Pierre of San Diego, Calif., and Teri (Dustin) Krause of Detroit Lakes; five grandchildren; two brothers, Russell and Lyle Austad, both of Oklee; and two sisters, Judy Bartz of Coon Rapids, Minn., and Jeanne Hoiby of Blaine, Minn.

Preceding him in death were his parents and a son, Jonathan.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15 at Community Alliance Church in Detroit Lakes, with the Rev. Duane Lahlum officiating. Interment will be in Ebenezer Lutheran Cemetery, Oklee, Minn., with military rites provided by the Lake Region Honor Guard.
