Bemidji Police officer Dane Donnell will attend the workshop, Chief Mike Mastin said. The event will be held from 8 a.m. to noon at Hagg-Sauer Hall on Bemidji State’s campus. Area police, teachers, probation and corrections officers, social workers and anyone who works with children are encouraged to attend. Cost is $25.

Mark Martin, a veteran Minneapolis police officer and instructor for the National Gang Center will present "Understanding Minnesota Gangs" at the event.

According to a release, topics will include gang definitions and statutes in Minnesota, reasons why children join gangs, factors that pre-dispose children to gang membership and various levels of gang involvement.

Martin will also provide an overview of gangs in Minnesota, covering Native, White Supremacist and Latino gangs.

As part of his role at the National Gang Center, Martin provides instruction and training to local, tribal, state and federal law enforcement agencies.
