Freshman baseball team wins Alexandria title
The Bemidji Lumberjacks freshmen retained the title of the Alexandria Invitational with a pair of well-pitched victories Saturday.
Bemidji shaded Alexandria 3-2 in the semifinal, then took the title 2-1 over Brainerd.
It lifted Zach McDermott's nine to 11-0. Friday's twin bill at Thief River Falls was rained out and likely will be rescheduled.
Ryan Hirt and Devin Barrett combined on a five hitter against Alex with Barrett coming on in the fifth to get his second win.
They fanned three but walked eight, seven by Hirt.
Bemidji managed eight hits with Connor McNallan getting two.
Bemidji scored once in the fourth, sixth and seventh to overcome a 2-0 deficit.
In the title game, the Jacks scored in the second and third and made the lead stand up.
Drew Peterson went the route, spacing five hits, for his third win. The lone run off his deliveries was unearned.
Bemidji had eight safeties, with Hirt and Logan Crosby
each getting two.
