I read yesterday's (Oct. 7) editorial urging me to become a champion for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program with great interest. And today I'm writing to tell you I intend to do ex-actly that. I know how important LIHEAP is to Minnesotans. Few states benefit more from this program than we do.
One of the reasons I joined the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, is because it has jurisdiction over LIHEAP funding. But I'm also proud to tell you that during my first week as a U.S. senator I joined the Northeast Midwest Senate Coalition. This bipartisan coalition of senators is responsible for the inclusion of the $5.1 billion LIHEAP funding you mentioned in your editorial.
Over the next few months our coalition will fight for any additional funding that our folks need to stay warm this winter. I'm also proud to say I sit on the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, which has jurisdiction over LIHEAP funding.
I applaud your vigilance on such an important issue and I promise you I share your concern. As another Minnesota winter rapidly approaches, no family should be left out in the cold.
