BEMIDJI – U.S. Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., has nominated Nicholas Gubbels of Bemidji for admission to the U.S. Air Force Academy and Jacob Letson of Bemidji to the U.S. Naval Academy.

Both are seniors at Bemidji High School.

If chosen for an appointment by the academy, the two would be part of the class of 2017 and enter this fall.

“I am very pleased to nominate Nicholas Gubbels and Jacob Letson to the U.S. Air Force and Naval Academy, respectively,” Franken said in a news release. “Each year, I nominate several talented young Minnesotans to our nation’s military academies because of their strong character, academic and athletic achievements, and demonstrated leadership ability.

“I have no doubt that Nick and Jake have the ability to excel at their chosen Academy and become a successful future leader in our nation’s military.”

Gubbels, the son of James and Kristina Gubbels of Bemidji, has captained the football, track and swimming teams. He is also a member of the National Honor Society and is a Student Council representative.

Letson, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Letson, is a member of the cross-country, track and weight-lifting teams. He also belongs to the National Honor Society and Math League and is an AP scholar.

Franken each year nominates qualified young Minnesotans to the four U.S. Service academies, including the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

The individual service academies make the final admission decisions and begin notifying nominees of their status in February.
