Francis "Fran" M. Saeger, 87, of Scottsdale, Ariz., formerly of Bemidji, died Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, at his home in Arizona.

A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at Messinger Indian School Mortuary in Scottsdale.

He was born April 6, 1921, to Fred and Bertha Saeger in Ortonville, Minn. He spent his first 20 years living in Milbank, S.D. He moved to Minneapolis and was employed at Brown Clothing. In 1944, he met Laura Loewen and on June 9, 1945, they were married in Mt. Lake, Minn. Initially, they lived in Minneapolis, then Canby, Minn., before moving to Bemidji in 1948 where they owned and operated retail variety and clothing stores for 42 years, and retired in 1989. In Bemidji, he was actively involved with the First Lutheran Church, Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, Town & Country Golf Club, Old Car Club, and co-founder of the Koffee Klutch. He enjoyed sports; he scored three holes-in-one in golf and attended many baseball, football and basketball games throughout Minnesota and Arizona. He was an ardent fan of the Twins, Vikings and Suns. He and his wife traveled throughout North America and countries around the world. Between 1978 and 2006, he and his wife wintered in Scottsdale and moved there permanently in October 2006. During the time in Scottsdale, he was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church and Papago Mt. Lions Club.

He is survived by his wife; son, Robert (Gloria) Saeger of Scottsdale; daughters, Janet (Bob) Helberg of Scottsdale and Carol (Chuck) Gercke of Parker, Colo.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and brother, Kenneth (Mae) of Milbank.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and an infant son.
