Forfeit losses costly
The Bemidji wrestlers were caught shorthanded Tuesday when they hosted Brainerd as 18 forfeited points dashed any hopes of a victory.
Brainerd took advantage of the free points to defeat the Jacks 48-14.
BHS never led in the meet although the Lumberjacks did manage ties at 6-6 and 9-9 early in the action.
The 9-9 deadlock did not last long, however, as Bemidji was docked a team point immediately after its second match win for unsportsmanlike behavior.
Brainerd went on to claim the next four matches to forge a 24-8 lead heading into the 160-pound bout.
Kade Johnson temporarily stemmed the tide with a 7-1 victory at 160 but the Warriors cemented the win with a pin victory at 170.
After three consecutive Bemidji forfeits the match ended on a positive note for the Jacks as Al Johnson defeated James Weiss 8-1.
The visitors opened the meet with a pin victory at 106 but Bemidji's Brian Maas answered with a pin at 113. Maas was leading 12-3 over Drew Bruen when he stuck Bruen 3:22 into the battle.
Dylon Sauceda lost 6-2 at 120 but BHS teammate Logan Crosby was a 4-1 winner at 126. Instead of a 9-9 tie, however, Bemidji was assessed a point penalty after Crosby's match so the Lumberjacks trailed 9-8.
Robert Treuer and Craig Maas both lost decisions and Colton Doty sustained a concussion during his 145-pound match and had to withdraw.
Kodi Craft dropped a 3-1 decision at 152 but Kade Johnson won his 160-pound match 7-1.
A pin win by Brainerd at 170 and three Bemidji forfeits made the heavyweight ending moot but Al Johnson ended the evening with his 8-1 victory.
Bemidji returns to action Thursday when it travels to Blackduck to take on Fosston-Bagley at 5 p.m. and BCLB at 7:30 p.m.
