Mark Fodness, who coached the Bemidji High School boys and girls tennis teams from 1986 to 1993, officially returned to those posts Tuesday when he was hired by BHS activities director Troy Hendricks.
Fodness replaces Scott Engelstad who assumed the tennis coaching duties after Fodness retired and maintained the positions for 17 years until announcing his retirement this spring.
"When I stepped down we had a young family and I knew that I couldn't be away from them that much," Fodness said. "Now that the kids are older I have a bit more time."
Fodness had no intentions of returning to the high school coaching ranks but, when Engelstad decided to leave, Fodness and his family talked about the possibility.
"We decided that this was the right time to come back," Fodness said. "Scott did a great job with the program and that will help make the transition easier."
Fodness will begin his duties this fall with the girls program. The boys tennis team plays during the spring season.
"Mark is a fantastic teacher and did a great job coaching the program during his previous stint," Hendricks said. "We are very happy to have Mark back on board."
