Former Grand Forks resident Flora VanDellen, 93, of Detroit Lakes passed away on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at the St. Mary's Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes.
Flora Koolstra was born the daughter of Wybe and Agnes (Epema) Koolstra on Oct. 1, 1915 in Rinsumageest, Friesland, Netherlands. On October 2, 1933 Flora married Hieke VanDellen in Crookston, Minn. Hielke and Flora farmed north of Crookston from 1938 until 1959, when they moved to a farm in Missouri. In 1971, Flora moved to Grand Forks, working at various jobs before becoming a foster grandparent in 1978, which she enjoyed for 27 years, until 2005. The children were her life and she loved going to work everyday.
Flora is survived by children Albert VanDellen of Everson, Wash., Agnes (Richard) Swiers of Detroit Lakes, Henry VanDellen of Minneapolis, Wilmer (Ada) VanDellen of Mentor, Minn., Arlene (Alvin) Kramer of Grand Forks, Dennis VanDellen of Denver, Colo., and Susan Allen of Portland, Ore.; 26 grandchildren; 66 great grandchildren; 15 great-great grandchildren; and a cousin, Jessie Brolsma of Crookston.
Preceding Flora in death were her parents; her husband Hielke (June 12, 1964); brothers Ted, Miner, Peter, William and John Koolstra; a great grandson, Mark Stap; and one sister, Vivian Frisbe.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23 at the Stennes Funeral Home in East Grand Forks, Minn. There will be visitation at the funeral home from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, followed by a prayer service at 11 a.m., after which visitation will resume until the time of services.
