Floodwater forces U.S. 2 closure between Minot, Towner N.D. Highway 41 closed in Velva, N.D., for levee construction
U.S. Highway 2 from the East Burdick Expressway Junction at Minot to about four miles west of Towner, N.D., has been closed.
Local traffic won't be allowed to travel between the closed area and Towner, either.
In a news release, the North Dakota Department of Transportation and the North Dakota Highway Patrol said local traffic only will be allowed on U.S. 2 from the expressway junction at Minot to west of Towner.
To continue to move commerce and truck traffic, traffic is being detoured:
U.S. 2 eastbound traffic will go south on U.S. Highway 83 out of Minot to N.D. Highway 23. Take state Highway 23 east to U.S. Highway 52, then take U.S. 52 southeast to U.S. Highway 281 at Carrington. Take U.S. Highway 281 back to U.S. Highway 2, just west of Devils Lake.
Westbound traffic on U.S. 2 will go south on US Highway 281, west of Devils Lake to U.S. Highway 52 at Carrington, then take Highway 52 northwest to state Highway 23. Take Highway 23 west to U.S. Highway 83, then drive north on 83 to Minot.
Alternate routes are available for local traffic on other state highways, but motorists should be aware they will encounter areas of construction work, water on the roadway, one-lane traffic, reduced speeds and width restrictions, according to the release.
Cautioned is urged while traveling, as vehicles that leave the roadway may become immersed in high water, the release said.
When a road is closed it is illegal to go around barricades, and motorists can be fined.
For road information, motorists should go to www.dot.nd.gov or call 511.
