Five more file for Bemidji City Council
Five additional candidates for Bemidji City Council filed for election on Tuesday, the last day filing was open.
There now will be a five-man race for Bemidji mayor as David Lalone filed for mayor. Four other men previously filed for mayor: Ron Johnson, the current Ward 3 councilor; Dave Larson, Laverne "Pedie" Pederson and Adam Steele.
Bemidji is guaranteed a new mayor in 2011 as current Mayor Richard Lehmann has been endorsed by the Republican Party to challenge incumbent state Rep. John Persell, DFL-Bemidji, in 4A.
Prior to Tuesday, no one had filed for the Ward 2 councilor position, but now there will be a three-man race for the position. Incumbent Councilor Roger A. Hellquist filed, as did Reed Olson and Richard A. Sathers.
Linda L. Lemmer, a resident of Ward 4, filed for the at-large councilor position. Previously, Byron J. Rock, also a Ward 4 resident, and Jim Thompson filed for the position, so a three-person race has been set for that seat.
Bemidji will have a new at-large councilor in 2011 as current at-large Councilor Barb Meuers has announced that she will not seek re-election.
The race for the Ward 4 councilor position did not change. Incumbent Jerry Downs is challenged by Rita Albrecht, a former city staff member.
