Fishing: Late spring delays trout stocking
BEMIDJI — Because of the late spring, Bemidji area DNR officials are unable to stock the area trout streams prior to Saturday’s stream trout opener.
Traditionally the fisheries officials stock the area streams a week or two before opening day but this year the stream and bank conditions prohibit that from happening.
The area streams that are included in the early-season stocking program are the Clearwater River near Pinewood (rainbow and brown trout), Sucker Brook near Itasca Park (brook trout) and the Battle River near Kelliher (rainbow trout).
Trout will be stocked in those waters when stream conditions improve but no date has been set.
