First Friday Art Walk set

The First Friday Art Walk in Bemidji will be Friday and will include the following participants:

-- Bemidji Community Art Center First Friday Art Walk and Opening reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. Friday at 426 Bemidji Ave. N. The BCAC will be featuring a new exhibit "The Palette: Exploring the media of painting," works by Natalia Himmirska and her students in encaustic and other media of canvas and panel. Learn more about this technique at 6 p.m. Friday. All proceeds from Shop 426 benefit BCAC programming. The BCAC is free and open to the public. -- Wild Hare Bistro and Coffee House will present "Express This!" drawings by Nina Lubarski. An opening reception will be held from 3-5 p.m. Friday at 523 Minnesota Ave. N.W. Lubarski is a K-12 art teacher and practicing artist in the Bemidji area. After the reception, Wild Hare will feature its own culinary artists at the First Friday Wine Bar from 5-9 p.m. For details, call 444-JAVA.

-- Dunn Bros Coffee will host an opening reception for photographer Brandon Bjerknes from 5-7 p.m. Friday at 501 Paul Bunyan Drive S. Bjerknes' exhibit entitled "Simply Beautiful," will be shown through April.. Using digital photography, Brandon explores the world and attempts to capture its natural beauty. This is the first public display of Brandon's work. Also on display and available for purchase at Dunn Bros Coffee is Levandowski Pottery by Aron and Jena Levandowski and fused and slumped glassware by MaryBeth Vaudrin and Beverlee Olson. -- The Beltrami County Historical Society, in conjunction with Gallery North, will present "Spring Fling" now through May 2009. An opening reception will be held from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday at 130 Minnesota Ave. S.W. in the historic James J. Hill Great Northern Depot. Guests will enjoy refreshments. -- Bad Cat Creations Gallery & Gifts will host an opening reception from 5-7 p.m. Friday at 315 Irvine Ave. N.W. Bad Cat's featured artist will be Amiee Fredrickson, the creator of "Momsters" textile designs, as well as a visual artist working in Prisma color. For details, call 218-444-9225.

-- Gallery North will host its open house from 2-5 p.m. Friday at 502 Third St. N.W. The Gallery Showcase Artist for March is painter Maureen O'Brien, well known for Minnesota nature and wildlife paintings including the room sized mural in the Gallery North hallway. The featured artist for March is wildlife and nature photographer, Ashlee Morton.

-- Gallery North welcomes Spring with a watercolor class March 14 taught by Marion Caroline and Grace Garland. Students will paint and frame an 8x10 (can be matted and framed 11x14) painting of a colorful male and female goldfinch resting on a milkweed. All materials will be provided, and students will have the use of brushes and paint, suggestions for supplies to continue watercolor painting will be offered, registration is taken at Gallery North.

-- Cabin Coffeehouse and Café will host its First Friday Art Walk Reception from 4-6 p.m. Friday at 214 Third St. N.W. Bemidji State University student Brian Murphy will be available to discuss his artwork. Much of his work is inspired by his environment and portrays global issues and the human condition. -- The Bemidji Public Library will host its First Friday Art Walk Opening reception from 3-5 p.m. Friday featuring work by TrekNorth Advanced Placement Art Students hosted by instructor Kristin Gustafson. Students showing their work include Teighlor Anderson, Charlene Boser, Trevor Donovan, Blake Floerchinger, Heather Harrom, Gretchen Reese and Amber Sorenson. -- Mask & Rose Women's Theater Collective and the Northwood's Folk Collective will hold their First Friday Coffeehouse at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Wild Rose Theater, 501 Bemidji Ave. Performer sign-up begins at 6:30 p.m. Cost is $2 single or $5 family. The Fleur de Lis Gallery presents the work of Mary Therese Peterson in an exhibit of mixed media work entitled "Into the Light" with a reception from 5-7 p.m. Friday.
