BEMIDJI - A year ago Dale Finck of Bertha finished second in the Executive medalist chase and second in the tournament, losing to Joe Burgess of Woodbury in the Championship final.
Monday during the first day of qualifying Finck gave notice that he will be a factor once again as he shared the low Executive round of the day, joining Scott Hinners of Bemidji as the lone golfers to shoot 73.
A shot back was Lee Hetletved of Grand Forks while Derrick Johnson of Grand Forks shot 75 and Randy Landsverk of Fosston carded a 76.
Burgess will be the top seed when the match-play portion of the tournament begins on Wednesday.
Brian Patterson of Scandia carded a 73 Monday to post the low score among the Senior Championship hopefuls.
Close at his heels after the first day of qualifying with 75s are Matt Anderson of Zumbrota and John McEnroe of Woodbury. Jeff Hendrickson of Thief River Falls carded a 76 while Jeff Nelson of Bemidji, Curt Howard of Sapulpa, Okla. and Doug Hiney of Grand Forks finished with 77s.
Defending champion Bruce Nord of Grand Forks returns and will own the top seed when the match-play portion of the tournament begins Wednesday.
