Fern Dalby, 90, of Solway, MN, passed from this world on Thursday, January 31, 2013, while a resident at First Care Living Center in Fosston.

Memorial Services will be 2:00 pm, Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at the Cease Family Funeral Home in Bemidji. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Fern Jeanette (Nelson) Dalby was born on July 13, 1922, in Litchfield, MN, the daughter of Neville and Alma (Kossow) Nelson. As a young child, she along with her father, mother, and brother, moved to and established a small home/farm in Eckles Township, located west of Bemidji. Her adult home, also located between Wilton and Solway, MN, was located in Lammers Township. After graduating from Bemidji High School, Fern attended Bemidji Teacher’s College, earning a degree in elementary education. Fern's first teaching position was in Debs, MN, followed by a position in Walker, MN. Married to Melvin Dalby of Debs, MN, she returned to Bemidji and began work in School District 31 where she taught first, second and third grades at Northern Elementary School. She raised two children, Brenda, of Jackson Hole, WY, and Wesley, of Avon, MN. Upon retirement, Fern continued her involvement in many passions including, but not limited to, reading, writing, a good cup of coffee, gardening, traveling, dancing, bowling, yard sales, music, Bible studies, mission work, involvement in the American Swedish Institute and T.O.P.S.. An avid animal lover, she was also a benefactor to charities. Involvement and sponsorship commitments included the BSU Foundation, Operation SMILE, the Arbor Day Foundation, Minnesota Public Radio, SIM (Intercultural Missions), the Christian Appalachian Project, Native American culture, and the Beltrami County Humane Society. Fern was a member of the Solway Log Chapel in Solway, MN, and she often attended events hosted by the Oak Hills Christian College.

Fern is survived by her daughter, Brenda (Bruce) Ostendorf of Jackson, WY, her son, Wesley (Judy) Dalby of Avon, MN, grandchildren, Travis Ostendorf, Morgan (Ostendorf) Phillips, Angie Jager, Kristin (Travis) Sand, Ashley (Adam) Goebel, Kellie (Shawn Primus) Dalby, and great-grandchildren, Aubrey, Alexa, and Avery Goebel, Isaac Primus, and Audra Dalby. Fern was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother, Boyd Nelson.
