BEMIDJI – The Al Hackner rink of Thunder Bay defeated the Pete Fenson rink of Bemidji 6-4 Sunday in the championship game of the Bernick’s Miller Lite Open at the Bemidji Curling Club.

Hackner used the hammer to score a point in the first end and then stole a point in the second when Fenson’s shot to the button was a bit long.

Fenson, however, drew within 2-1 with a point in the third end and tied the game with a steal in the fifth.

Hackner recovered with a point in the sixth but Fenson took the lead with two in the seventh.

The Thunder Bay squad answered with three in the eighth to claim the championship of the 18-team tournament.

Earlier Sunday in the quarterfinals John Shuster of Duluth nipped Eric Fenson of Bemidji 6-5 and Mike McCarville of Thunder Bay stopped Matt Stevens of Bemidji 5-3.

Sunday’s semifinals saw Pete Fenson eliminate Shuster 5-4 in an extra end and Hackner bounce McCarville 6-4.
