Faces of the shutdown: David Sauer, Lake Bemidji State Park
Another casualty of the state government shutdown is Senior Day at Lake Bemidji State Park, scheduled for today.
"I have worked for six months getting it going," said David Sauer, president of Friends of Lake Bemidji State Park and chairman of Senior Day.
He said Bemidji Transit brings to the park about 100 elders who enjoy Go and Whoa Harness Club wagon rides, mobility assistance by members of the Northland Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol, a walleye and wild rice hotdish dinner prepared by the Leech Lake Fish Fry Crew and musical entertainment.
"I saw little old ladies dancing on the bike trail last year," Sauer said.
About 40 volunteers were planning to help out today for what would have been the 14th annual Senior Day. Sauer said the committee tried to relocate Senior Day to Buena Vista, but the transit doesn't go that far out of town.
He said seniors look forward to the event all year.
