PARK RAPIDS, Minn. -- A former Hubbard County murder suspect who still faces child pornography charges will contest search warrants used to obtain evidence in the case, his attorney said.

Murder charges against Fredrick William Bachman were dismissed in November. But investigators combing through mounds of burned evidence discovered child pornography on Bachman’s computer, authorities said.

He faces seven felony counts of possession of child pornography.

Bachman was living at a Beauty Lake home that the owner, James Schwartzbauer, 57, was converting to a religious retreat.

Last summer, Schwartzbauer’s body was found in the burned-out wreckage of the home in Lake Hattie Township.

Bachman was charged in the homicide, but little physical evidence linked him to the death, and Schwartzbauer’s cause of death was undetermined by the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Bachman is not in custody. He bonded out of the Hubbard County jail after prosecutors dismissed the murder charges, letting the pornography charges stand.

Bachman is believed to be living with his family somewhere in the Twin Cities area. He appeared Monday at a hearing in Hubbard County with his Twin Cities attorney.

He had lived at the Schwartzbauer home on and off for about five years.

Another hearing is set for April 11. Bachman’s attorney, Tracy Eichhorn-Hicks, said he will question the search warrants used to obtain the computerized data.
