Eugene (Nay tau we-shkung) "First One Standing" G. Dow, 72, of Ponemah, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008, at the Cornerstone Nursing Home in Bagley, Minn.

Traditional funeral services in the Indian custom will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Ponemah Community Center with Anna Gibbs officiating. A wake will begin this afternoon at the Ponemah Community Center and will continue until the time of the service. Burial will be in the Family Burial Grounds in Ponemah with military honors being provided by the VFW Post of Red Lake.

The pallbearers will be Spencer Whitefeather, Blaine Freeman, James Dow, Vincent Dow, Donald Dow and Howard Whitefeather.

The honorary pallbearers will be Rudy Johnson, Marvin Hurd, Keith Ehrich, Steve Stout, Curtis Perkins, Keith Dow, Byron Dow, Bruce Dow Jr., Rudy Kingbird, Kevin Heinonen Jr., Duane Dow Jr. and Duane Iceman.

He was born Nov. 8, 193, to Grover and Irene (Wilson) Dow in Ponemah. He attended school in Ponemah and Red Lake.

He entered the U.S. Navy in 1954, serving during the Korean conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1958 with the rank of Seaman Apprentice 1st class. He married Ruth Ann Whitefeather on June 26, 1959. He worked in logging, fishing, and he was a truck driver in Minneapolis for many years. He enjoyed playing with his grandchildren, being outdoors, long rides in the woods, crossword puzzles, music, going to the casinos and watching all-star wrestling.

He is survived by his wife of Ponemah; daughters, Vivian (Blaine) Freeman of Bemidji, Debra (Steve) Stout of Minneapolis and Elaine Heininen of Detroit Lakes, Minn.; sons, Vincent (Bonnie) Dow, Donald (Rose) Dow and James Dow, all of Ponemah; a special granddaughter he and his wife raise, Mary Lynn (Keith Ehrich) Heinonen of Ponemah; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; sisters, Margaret Perkins, Joyce Brown and Olive (Kenny) Dow, all of Ponemah; brothers, Edward (Pat) Dow, Duane Dow and Bruce Dow, all of Ponemah; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Alvina Dow; brothers, Byron and Donald Dow; and a grandson.
