Child, father die after kayak overturns on Hart Lake in Hubbard County

Ervin S. Nordlund, 86, of Detroit Lakes, died Sunday, January 4, 2009 at Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes.

Ervin S. Nordlund was born to Axel and Alma (Lingensjo) Nordlund on Sept. 11, 1922 in Middle River, Minn. He was raised and educated in rural New York Mills. He worked for the CCC Camp near Big Falls, Minn. Ervin served with the U.S. Army. He married Beatrice Hanninen in March 1946. He later married Darlene Power Larsen on Oct. 10, 1969 in Watertown, S.D.

During his working life, Ervin worked for Ole Lind Boat Works, did carpenter work, worked for Knutson Brothers Texaco, owned and operated Highway 10 Texaco, worked for UBC, Peavey and Stenerson lumberyards, all in Detroit Lakes, and was the caretaker for the Highway 10 rest stop near Frazee. He retired in 2006.

Family was number one in Erv's life. He loved taking his grandchildren fishing. Hunting, playing cards, following the Minnesota Twins, watching "Walker, Texas Ranger" and "Wheel Of Fortune" were some of his favorite pastimes. His church family, his volunteer work at the Senior Citizens Center and his friends were a big part of his life, as well.

Ervin was a life member of the American Legion and the VFW.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene Nordlund of Detroit Lakes; children, Ronnie (Linda) Nordlund of Detroit Lakes, Terry (Ann) Nordlund of Bemidji, Janis (Gary) Olson of Detroit Lakes, Diane (Dennis) Castagneri of Detroit Lakes, Sherri Anderson of Fargo, Kristi (Don) Nicholson of Hawley, Darla Nordlund of Fargo, Kevin (Kim) Nordlund of Owatonna, Minn., and Jason Nordlund of Brainerd; stepsons, Terry (Elsie) Larsen of Detroit Lakes and David (Jackie) Larsen of Eagan, Minn.; a son-in-law, Mike Disse of Chicago, Ill.; 30 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and two sisters, Hulda (Charles) Rossum of Branden, Minn., and Linda Roberts of New York Mills.

Preceding Ervin in death were his son, Dale; a stepdaughter, Bonnie Disse; three brothers and one sister.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes; there will be a prayer service at 7 p.m.. The visitation continues for one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 8 at Grace Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Eric Lemonholm officiating. Interment will be in the Strawberry Lake Mennonite Cemetery, rural Ogema, with Military Rites provided by the Lake Region Color Guard.

The David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes is serving the family.
